Set Pressure of the pressure safety valve for hydrotesting 1

Hi Everyone!!

Hope everyone doing great!

We are going to do 48" CS Pipeline hydrotest.

Please give any opinion as there is no clause found in B31.3 for hydrotest PSV set pressure, PSV set pressure for pneumatic only prescribed.

SO anyone please let me know how to confirm/calculate the set pressure for pressure relief valve during the hydrotest.

That's an interesting one.

Not sure that Pressure relief valves are installed for hydrotest as the pressure is closely monitored, other than temperature change there is no process to go wrong. Also you really don't want the water to even leak out a few drops without knowing about it.

Remember that the test kit itself should be designed to work at the test pressure so may in fact be designed for 50 bar or higher and hence its pressure relief would be based on that.

This though is how items get over pressurised during test....

You can take 22 bar as the set pressure of the PSV.

This is generally found in the clients Quality Manual or the contractor's quality procedure.

I really don't think you want or need a PSV on a hydrostatic test.

Your test pressure tends to vary so you need to reset it all the time and you should be monitoring the pressure all the time.

If this is a pipeline you shouldn't be doing it to 31.3. All the pipeline tests are 24 hours and you should monitor the pressure then measure any water taken out.
