Shared Alarm Systems

I am currently doing a review of codes to see if there is any code that would prohibit using the fire alarm horns (With a separate code) to use for Ammonia leak detection alarms. So far what I have seen from ASHRAE/IMC/IFC/NFPA, there is nothing that requires the fire system to have its own unique horns. Is there something that I am missing? I seem to remember at one time there needing to be a separate alarm system for fire protection, but I cant seem to find anything to that effect.

If anyone knows any codes I may be missing out on, or even if you remember anything about this topic, if you could please let me know I would greatly appreciate it.

Not near the books but think 72 says something like distinct

Also have seen ammonia leak detection tied into a fire alarm system

14.3.4.3.1.2 Where acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction, the fire alarm system shall be permitted to be used for other emergency signaling or for class changes, provided that the fire alarm is distinctive in signal and overrides all other use.

I do believe that NFPA does say distinct, but that also raises debate as to what 'distinct' means. Is a separate tone or code from the same system distinct...etc...

I have also seen the term, clear and identifiable, but that also allows the same debate to ensue. Thank you for your response. I appreciate the input.

That just about nails it. Thank you, I have been searching for a while. So, they probably need to run it past their local fire marshall/regulating body, but it seems as though per the wording of NFPA 72 it is acceptable.
