Shear Tab to RHS 9

Can anyone point me to a paper with the solution of a shear tab connected to a rectangular HSS or have a solution to this? Thanks...

Or AISC design guide 24. Both are based on the same research, just have equations presented in slightly different ways.
This is also found in chapter K of AISC 360-10.

I've been through this twice and the only reference I can find is in Table 7.2 which makes reference to equation K 1-10; I assume this is in reference to AISC 360-10. My copy of AISC 360-16 makes no reference. The formula presented appears to set a limit of the HSS wall based on the shear tab thickness. There should be a lot more to it than that.

To me it's really no different to a shear tab connected to a web of a wide flanged section. Tab itself is designed exactly the same irrespective.

The formula presented appears to set a limit of the HSS wall based on the shear tab thickness. There should be a lot more to it than that.
Not really, that's about the only column size check required as I understand it. Often this is referred to as a form of punching shear or shear transfer check.
 
The references appear to be for transverse plates; I'm looking for a solution for longitudinal shear plate, still without success.

The picture that you have posted is O.K. Provided that the fin plate ( or shear tab) yields before punching shear of supporting member. Check for local shear and punching .. if not satisfied , strengthen the conn. ( e.g. slot both faces and extend the fin plate to other web also )

For reasons unknown to me, AISC renovated Chapter K of the specification in 360-16. From the commentary on K2.3:
AISC 360-16 Comm. K2.3 said:
Over a wide range of connections tested, only one limit state was identified for the rectangular HSS column: punching shear failure related to end rotation of the beam, when a thick shear plate was joined to a relatively thin-walled HSS. In previous editions of the Specification, the available shear strength of the HSS wall was compared to the available tensile strength of the plate. Because the check only applies to single-plate shear connections, it has been removed from the Specification. A check has been added to the AISC Manual that investigates punching shear of the HSS wall due to a beam end reaction applied eccentrically, with the eccentricity being the distance from the HSS wall to the center-of-gravity of the bolt group.

This check is in Part 9 of the manual (Design of Connecting Elements), and is on pages 9-14 through 9-17 in the 2nd printing.

That's what you're looking for.

I could find the reference in the Steel Construction Manual and I would have thought there would be more to it... such as width of plate, length of plate and load...

That's true. Often times, I know the formula to use, but couldn't remember which book address it...
