Short Radius 45 degree elbow

What are the dimensions for a short radius 45 degree elbow per code? Or where can I find this information?

Assuming you are dealing with a steel, butt weld end elbow... You'll find the dimensions locating the weld ends in ASME B16.9.

If you're dealing with other materials or other end connections, let us know - it'll be a different ASME standard.

Are you sure you want to do this ?

At the intrados, you may end up with two welds very nearly overlapping.

If you are using thin walled stainless material (10S or 5S) the HAZ would definitely overlap.

Tell us more about the design and your need to use a short radius component.

The material is A234 WPB Carbon Steel and it is for a 2" cooling water line.

MJ No I am not sure but that is what the client has spec'd out. Trying to find enough info to see what else we can do.

ASME B16.9 does not cover 45 degree short radius elbows with butt weld end connections. The only 45 degree elbows covered in B16.9 are of the long radius type.

I do not believe that there is an ASME standard that covers butt welded 45 degree short radius elbows.

If anyone is aware of a standard that covers butt welded 45 degree short radius elbows please let me know.

First for that size why do you want to use anything "short Radius"?

If you must have Short Radius, take a 90 degree Short radius elbow, cut it in half and re-bevel the end.

B16.9 does, in fact, address 45° SR elbows. As pennpiper pointed out, they can be cut from 90's and made/certified in the factory as B16.9 products.

6.2.4 Segmental Elbows. Factory-made segments of short radius, long radius, and 3D radius elbows may be made to meet customer angle requirements. With the exception of the B dimension, factory-made segments of elbows shall meet all other requirements of this Standard. The B dimension for segmented elbows can be calculated as follows...

... When special elbows are intended for field segmenting, the outside or inside diameter tolerance shall be furnished throughout the fitting by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. Any mismatch on the outside or inside diameter needs to be corrected in the field by grinding, back-welding, or bridging of weld to meet the applicable piping code requirements. Although the elbow intended for field segmenting must meet the requirements of this Standard, once the field-segmented elbow is cut, it is not a B16.9 product.

The last sentence clearly states that the 45 degree short radius elbow so produced will not be an ASME B16.9 product and as such it will not be to any spec.

I think curlyjackme is looking for a 45 degree short radius butt welded elbow to some spec.

Then the answer is clear, use a regular (long radius) 45 degree ell.

The last sentence clearly refers to field cuts. Other non-standard ells may clearly be made in the factory to full B16.9 compliance. That would be why I stated the words "made/certified in the factory" in my post above.

The reason for a sr 45 degree elbow is that there is not room for a lr 45 degree elbow. I was trying to find out if they could be purchased instead of spending the manhours cutting lr 45's in half due to the amount of them that was need for the project. The issue has been resolved, but thanks for all the reply's and information.

We finally decided to buy SR 90 degree elbows and cut them in half and re-bevel them, and used them.
