Hello guys,

I've been a transmission engineer for a few years now, and most of this time I've been using PSSe as my main analysis tool. I think it is an excellent software for power flow and stability analysis but its learning curve is a little steep.

Now most of my work, I do it manually (that is, without automation programing).

I was wondering if someone could give me a lead on how to start with automation of PSSe. This will greatly reduce my burden of work, as many of the stuff I do is quite repetitive.

I know how to work more or less with IDV's, but I know that there is also python and you can do a lot there.... as well as PSAS.

Any comments?

The easiest way to automate PSSe is with the Python interface. I would check out these guys: They are a company that specialise in Python training for power systems analysis, mostly with PSSe.

In particular, check out their blog archive, which has some guides to using Python with PSSe:

Say I want to run a bunch of dynamic cases (contingencies) from the same dynamic base case.
 
I concur with using Python. In fact, from what I remember, Siemens/PTI is trying to push everyone to Python instead of their internal language. They have some very good training courses, and I believe even a specific course on using Python. I would recommend their training if you can swing it.
 
Agreed that Python is what PTI has chosen for automation these days.

However, do you HAVE to use the PTI PSDS4 software? If you have a choice you might want to give the transient stability package of PowerWorld Simulator a try. All of its "automation" for running multiple fault studies/switching studies is handled directly by the software with no coding required. The definitions are dialog based and directly access the internal powerflow and dynamics databases. WAY easier to use...you will be up and running and doing studies in less than a day with the full range of worse case analysis and plotting tools made available with no need to write your own code.

Thank you for your reply. I used Powerworld during college and during an internship at ISO-NE......it was a great program. Great GUI, very intuitive and the help section was very useful. Unfortunately, the utility where I'm working uses PSS/e.

Do you know if Powerworld has already incorporated to its library dynamic representation of Wind and PV models?

The PowerWorld transient stability tool has coded the GE and PTI transient stability models. To directly answer your question...yes, the standard type 1, 2, 3, and 4 wind models are in the code. Basically any PTI or GE model is, or will be in PowerWorld transient stability. Like any complex software you probably want to second check the answers with another piece of software.
