I have a single phase 115v reversible motor with a destroyed
switch. I have four wires from the motor (there is also a capacitor) they are labeled 1,2,3 and 4 From an ohmmeter 1 and 2 give a completed circuit. What kind of switch do I need and how do I wire it.

Hi bemerdude

Your running winding 1 & 2 appears OK .One question,if you have a destroyed starting switch, why can't you remove it and purchase a similar one form the vendor.
MG1-2.41 Terminal Markings Identified by wire colour or #s
T1/Blue/T2/White/T3/Orange/T4/Yellow
Starting windings T5/Black T8-Red
Main Windings of asingle phase motor are T1/T2/T3/T4
Starting windings are T5/T6/T7/T8.
These leads may not be used on all of the motors .It depends if they,2 voltage, reversible or a combination.
You say that your leads are marked 1/2/3/4.You could have the starting winding leads internally connected.
In any case, your capacitor is in series with the CS(centrifugal switch)and the starting winding.
Each lead from your starting winding connects to the wires on your main winding.

Good Luck

I agree with Gus that 1 & 2 are the RUN windings.

If the motor is 115v ONLY then 3 & 4 are the start windings.
Is the switch in the motor (centrifugal) bad or do you need the reversing switch (wall mount)?

What is the rating on the capacitor and if you swap the ohm meter leads on the "OPEN" leads does the needle jump for just an instant?

steveKW - Yes it jumps for an instant. The old switch which has no manufacturers label is a 12 connection 16 amp
3 phase 600V AC switch with a cylindrical body and has plastic cams that activate two contacts on each of three levels. Thanks for your help.
