Hello folks,
We were hired to do the evaluation of existing skylight structure. Dimensions in plane are 27'x54'. I will attach the picture so you can see the geometry. We have scans of the drawings that were filled in 2005 but they are not 100% legible. But I established based on 'materials table' that main members are 5" round hollow tubes with 1/4" wall thick. It is cladded with 1" insulated glass. I will also attach the picture of typical node connection -according to the drawings it's a 4.5" splicing element with plug weld - and that's what I observed during site inspection. The client is going to add an additional load of roughly 12 psf (it's going to be some kind of suspended ceiling and AC vents). I ran calcs in Robot Structural and it doesnt look bad (I consider dead load and snow only, because no wind is expected there since we have high buildings all around the skylight which is at 1st floor). So I checked stresses and deflection, and they are below allowable. I'd like to check connections also. Because of the additional loads, tension forces in nodes increase around 500-700 lbs..How this connection in attached picture should be checked ( we have a smaller section inside the main member and plug weld)? What else should I be concern about? Thank you in advance.
