Slabs carrying masonry walls

Dear All,

When designing suspended slabs that carry concentrated line loads (in the form of masonry walls), what is the general approach that you take? I specifically refer to areas that have a high concentration of these type of loads, such as bathroom areas.

Do you analyse the slab using an approximated uniformly distributed load or do you consider every line load separately?

I'd look at a few specific examples (an average condition along with perhaps a worst-case condition) and see what the slab does under a few line loads like that.

In many cases the average condition may work out fine without doing anything - but in some cases you may need to add additional rebar or consider a supplemental slab support under the wall.

I typically jack up the average, global dead load for that area appropriately, then try to align some extra rebar under the proposed wall lines.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I guess it really depends on both the spacing of the walls as well as the aspect ratio of the slabs.
