How do other engineers deal with the slight eccentricity caused by the slotted end connection to the gusset plate due to the thickness of the connecting plates. I generally offset the slotted plate and the gusset plate so that the face of the plates falls on the centreline of the HSS to minimise the moment. I neglect this when I design the connections. What do other engineers do? Are there any references? [ponder]

dik,

Why the hesitancy for field welds?

Below, this is not uncommon in my area:

Just a bit of a chikken sh*t... I've seen a few bad ones and these are for real loads... also field welds, if properly done and inspected are costly.

You can likely use A307B bolts for the temporary ones...

Many of my clients hate hot work. The small guys are worried about damage from some potential issue during welding. The large guys are concerned with the amount of paperwork required to approve the hot work, and avoid bothering plant employees etc.

I like dik have just an aversion to field welding. Although I've seen some really good welds done in the field, I've seen an equal amount of shit welds, with the most falling somewhere in between.

Site welding involves regional preference. I have never worked in an area where site welds are preferable to bolting, but there obviously are places...

I guess that's what I get for employment with a large contractor and then doing industrial/ag work after that. I see fillet welds and think, "sweet, pretty nice and easy". Even a PJP isn't the end of the world. Was always instructed to never call out a field CJP unless there was no other option (and even then, keep looking for another option).

Reminds me of some welding issues with Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris... [pipe]
