small tank installation 1

Hi basically we have 3 tanks to be installed in a concrete room of height 4.25 M. The tanks are 4.0 M high. We can not lift off the ceiling over the tank . How can we install it please any ideas? The tank is 2.5 tonnes in weight. As we can not lift from above is it possible to put embedded plates on the walls to somehow help?

We have a 10,000 gallon tank that (just) fit through a 10'x10' door. Needed to expand the tank capacity and static head by adding about 5' additonal. This was done by building a new segment with integral forklift pockets in it (two rectangular tubes passing through the walls and seal welded). New section was raised into position, then caulked to seal and clamped at periphery. In a similar vein, you could erect the tank in situ, and weld from the bottom up, in segments.

Call a rigger; they can do this stuff faster, cheaper, better than you, because they do it all the time.

You’ve given us the height of the tanks and their weight and nothing else about the tanks. And, you’ve told us you can’t lift from above, and only have .25M clear btwn. the top of the tank and the ceiling in the space. Just imagine all the other info. that might enter into how you would handle these tanks, and get them into place. Remember, we can’t see the tanks or the building layout from here. Then imagine how we would even guess at what to suggest. MikeH’s suggestion seems to be the best, since you are so vague about the details.

This type of question and the lack of meaningful info. needed to actually address the problem, makes me wonder how anything ever gets done in industry these days. Do you have any real engineers at your company that you could talk to about this problem, or at the tank supplier? Why wasn’t handling and installation considered when you ordered and spec’d. the tanks. You just can’t get a 3M tank through a 1M door.

If the room is small enough, some beams and jacks on the floor would let you scoot the tanks around as required. In a bigger room, you might need to put some temporary bolts in the floor to jack against. It's unlikely, but if you had the right conditions, you could flood the area and float them into place.

I am liking the airpads! Perfect and perfect clearence. I will see if there is any chance to implement some additional steel on the tank for toe jacks etc. Thank you for that.

I asked a rigger and they suggested sliding them in on steel sheets followed by a series of jacks. Still not too helpful or efficient.
dhengre. The tank has not been designed yet. The building doesnt even exist. Thanks for the comment though was truely helpful. Well done you deserve a pint on me.

That opens the opportunity to build the building around the tanks.

Doing so may or may not be a good idea in the long run.

A better solution might be to design the roof with removable sections above the tanks.

I've seen what Mint has suggested done quite frequently -- where there are removable sections in the floor above so that a big crane can come in and lift out the tank and install a new one.

So, who cares about "inefficient" method of sliding the tank in on a "cheap" pair of steel plates if you're only going to do it once?

Or: Buy the tank first, install and mount the tank second, then build the building's "roof" (or upper floor) over top of the tank as the third step.
