SOL 101 and 103 run perfectly, but SOL 105 gives excessive pivot ratios

Hello all,

So I am trying to do a Buckling analysis to a condensed Model and I get the Fatal Message 9050 (SEKRRS):

So I get a negative Matrix/Factor Diagonal Ratio and this won't allow Nastran to continue. Does anybody know why I get a negative Matrix/Factor Diagonal Ratio for SOL 105 but not for SOL 101? The model is exactly the same and I looked at this node and it looks absolutely normal. All the model are 3D CHEXA elements by the way.

What are the natural frequencies you got from Sol 103 run? One possibility is that in your your Sol 101 run, your applied force direction is constrained, while other directions are not constrained.

Thanks for your reply.

So the first 2 frequencies are around 11Hz, the 3rd is 89 Hz and the tenth is around 190 Hz.

I don't understand your possibility, could you re explain it? I have exactly the same loads on both calculations. In the SOL 101 I have SC1 with the SOL 105 Preload and SC2 with the SOL 105 Buckling laod.

Forget about my possibility. The Sol 103 results show that there are no rigid body modes. So my possibility will not hold.

Is it possible that you use different constraints for the 2 subcases in Sol 105?
 
No, the constraints are exactly the same. Only one Subcase has temperature and the other one doesnt.

I'm a bit surprised that you are using DMIG's in a sol105, unless you're sure that the buckling modes are defined by the residual structure.

Can you post the relevant sections of the sol105 f06 file?

So guys I think I found out why I get the Max Ratio fatal message.

I forgot to specify the SPC for the two buckling SCs.

Your static subcases are good. The matrix decomp yields a max ratio of < 1e5

Its the buckling case (subcase 10) which is the culprit.

Essentially what nastran solves for subcase10 is:

[K+Kd(preload)+lambda*Kd(buckle)]{phi} = {0}

The solution to this is only possible if [K+kd(preload)] is not positive definite, i.e structure should not buckle for the applied pre-load.

Now, I have no clue what your structure looks like or the applied loads on it, but if I were you I'll start by investigating whether the pre-load is excessive. Note excessive pre-load can result in a wrong solution or no solution.

BTW, there are UWM's complaining about missing loadsets. Maybe you have looked into this, but I just thought its worthwhile to mention this.

Thx. I did not notice those missing SPC's. Indeed that's what makes the [K+Kdpreload] not positive definite.
