Solar powered ferry replaces diesel powered ferry and doesn't work 3

If you watched the video in the original link that's one of the claims and is the background for some of the negative comments.

The solar bit is the only thing making this interesting wheras the windage of the ferry when loaded with more vehicles, underpowered motors and seemingly poor design in terms of maintaining itself when docked at either side.

Remember - More details = better answers

Here's the same sort of stuff up for a conventionally powered ferry.
Bear in mind these are the guys that fell for the high tech wave piercing catamaran story, and bought a ferry that was unable to leave dock, or had to turn round, for 10% of its scheduled departures because it couldn't handle the (well known) rough seas in its area of operation.

No, you will just tow a little row boat with the battery on board.
 
That is essentially the plan. Batteries to charge batteries. It seems that efficiency is a forgotten concept.
 
They'll likely get this worked out. Just a matter of time. I understand that electric motors are far more respondent than ICE motors.

I don't know, but it is likely a benefit for tugboat operations. Almost instant torque.

I suspect any number of electrical engineers can develop a control system to allow it to open very slooooooowwwwwlllllllyyyyyy.
 
In a car or truck you can increase weight without increasing the size of the vehicle.
Done a lot of trucking, have you?

Thanks, I didn't know that. I thought the speed and power was involved a little bit...
 
Waross, weight determines the number of wheels required on a truck. Weight determines the displacement of a boat. Displacement is measured volume. A boat must be physically larger to support more weight, a truck does not necessarily need to be.
 
No a boat needs to displace more water.

How it does that is your choice. Greater draught or more area in contact with the water.

The more wheels reduce the stress in the concrete pavement. The pavement was originally designed for a particular loading pattern. As time goes by, the load conditions may change and they have to add additional wheels to reduce the stress. Sort of like adding a little more displacement. :)
