I'm searching for a stateside source (foreign manufacture ok) of ferrocerium reds, both 1/4" and 3/8" in diameter.

Intended purpose is fire-starting tools so will be employed as a flint in this application.

As of yet I haven't located a domestic source for these.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

There were two companies I knew of that made ferro-cerium in the US. Neither is still in business, one was in NY and the other smaller one in Colorado. There has to be a least one manufactuer as there are several fire starters in the camping and survival market with a 1/4 or better bar.

These people are suppliers of ferro-cerium used in foundries and they also make flints. Whether they are ferro-cerium or an iron and misch-metal mix I don’t know.
They have a sales office in Canada.

There also several manufactureres in China and India but I have no definitive information. I have queried several metal import brokers to see if they have any leads.

PS:
I have a bar of some type pyrophoric material that I got as a prize at a Boy Scout Jamboree in the 5's. It still throws one hell of bunch of sparks.

Unclesyd,

Many thanks for the info. I've already contacted Treibacher and my inquiry was forwarded to their Austria office.

I've also contacted two companies in China as well. Still no response with availability and price.

I sure appreciate your help. Please let me know if you hear of any other sources!

Thanks so much!

Unclesyd,

Many thanks once again for the help, I checked with Surelight, and they produce only flints sized for lighter-type applications. A good thought though.

And no, I haven't posted on any import sites, but I'd appreciate a thread URL in case there are some promising leads from that source as well!

EdStainless,

Thanks to you as well. Submitted an inquiry to Molycorp just now, we'll see what shakes out there. Also looked for Goldschmidt, but URL I found in German didn't contain anything of RE related products. Any ideas? Perhaps I didn't hit the right source.

Thanks to both you gentlemen!

God bless,

Marshall

You may have this company, the name came from one of the metal brokers. He said he doesn't handle them and doesn't know who does but will see if the is someone in the US that does. He said use the HK office.

Unclesyd,

Thanks to you sir! I've fired-off an inquiry email to METALL RARE EARTH LIMITED, and indeed you are right it appears that they are the coorect firm to produce about any form of pyrophoric materials. We'll see what response I get. Thanks a million!

You mentioned a couple of import sites where another party was seeking ferro-cerium rods. Would you mind sharing the URL's to those as well? They might provide useful insight in this quest.

Thanks again, and God bless,

Marshall

You might contact Tom and if possible you and him combine your order for a better freight rate and only have one set of custom papers. This might help because of the material being pyrophoric.

Better yet you might become an importer.

Unclesyd,

I have emailed Tom as per your suggestion. I now have multiple overseas irons-in-the-fire. Perhaps one of them will heat up! Combining forces might indeed help overcome some of the red-tape and expense of importation! Time will tell.

Thanks for your continued help in this matter!

God bless,

halfstock,

I am also looking for a supplier of this material for the same reason. If you find a supplier or an outlet, I would be glad to go into an order with you or obtain some stock from you. I find myself in the same search as you, it seems.

If you find a supplier, please advise and I will do the same.

Thanks!

peeshooter,

Indeed I've been looking, and found a supplier:

Treibacher (USA) Corp.
2000 College Ave., P.O. Box 1438
Niagara Falls, NY 14302
Phone: 716-286-1250 | Fax: 716-286-1224

The product actually comes from their facilities in Austria, and the quote I was given was for a minimum order of 50 kilos of rod, at a price of $140.00 US per kilo delivered to Spokane Internat'l Airport packed in a metal drum, all taxes, import fees and other misc. red-tape fees on the hook of the importer.

Hope this helps.

God bless,

Marshall
