I am trying to locate a panel mount nut that will insert into a pre-drilled hole in 1/2" plywood. It must have a collar on both sides (similar to a Chicago bolt) but it must have an internal 1/4-20 thread so that I can screw in and out a 1/4-20 thumb screw.

The collar, preferably, would be low profile to flush.

Standard shoulder nuts, self tapping nuts etc will not do for this application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it has a collar on both ends, how would it be installed? Some kind of deformation like a blind rivet?

Regards,

Cory

It would be two parts that would thread together like a Chicago bolt. But unlike a Chicago bolt, it would have an internal 1/4-20 thread to take an additional bolt.

Thank you for the link. I have tried all of these and have found all of them to be unsatisfactory for various reasons.

Actually, on second reading I realize that I am looking at something I have not considered before. The riveting T nuts are not ideal but may well do the job. I would still prefer something removable though.

I think I';ve heard this kind of thing called a sex nut or was it sex bolt back in the UK.

You may want to google those terms, I'm not brave enough to from work.

I can see why you would not google sex nuts at work! I just tried it!

These are not what I am looking for but thanks for trying.

Yeah, this was back in the days when I used to skateboard and they were used to hold the rails on hte underside of the board.

Thinking about it some more though I don't think they had the thread you need, they went through the board and rail.

Sorry for the red herring.

Yes, it probably would. I have some concern that it may spin but we are getting close.

Thank you for the link.

We used to call the items berkshire came up with Riv nuts as I recall. I'm wondering how well they'd work in plywood or if they'd tend to crush it.

Might get around this using washers or maybe some adhesive/epoxy though.

I have installed rivnuts into plywood subfloors of full-size vans, you do need to use a wide (fender) washer as a backing. Undersizing the hole so you have to tap the rivnut into place will help with rotation. They make them specifically for wood, but I don't have experience with them.

I would be inserting the riv nuts (if I were to use them) into Baltic Birch plywood. This stuff is very tough and I wonder if I could pound the riv nuts into it (considering they have tines). I will try a standard T nut first.

Don't think it's what you're looking for, but go to mcmastercarr.com and look up 'Threaded Inserts' under "Fastening and Sealing"

You could look at Keenserts... might work for your application.
