I am looking for a standard or short specification for the construction of a spectacle blind plate for use in a steam blowdown line (vented to atmosphere). It may have other names but what I mean by a spectacle lind plate is basically a blind flange and an attached spacer (it looks like a pair of spectacles) that can be used to allow isolation of a line (requiring a short shutdown)without introducing a valve into the system.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows of an applicable standard, has a short specification, or simply has some experience with the use of a spectacle blind plate.

Thanks,

Calder

The thickness of spectacle or slip blind plates is covered by ASME B31.1 (If power steam piping) or ASME B31.3 (if refinery or chemical plant piping).

Check out API standard 590, Steel line blanks, from the American Petroleum Institute ( API standards are applicable to many industries beyond the petroleum industry.

You Might want to look at Cam-Set, This is the higher end of the spectical bline market but has some really nice features if it will be used a lot.

you may fabricate the figure 8 using the thickness defined in b31.3. it is found under para 304.5.3 equation 15. note that that the material should comply with the listed components.

Check out ASME B16.48, that standar covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking and testing for operating line blanks(paddle blank like spectacle blind plate)
