Spiral as a Sweep Path? 1

Any work arounds for this? I need to model a coiled cable.

What sort of problem are you having? I found that if you create the spiral based on a origin-centered sketch, you can then create an axis perpendicular to the spiral. Then create a plane through the axis and the end point of the spiral. Use this plane for the section sketch and the sweep should work. This works in SW2004.

I take it that you need something other than an involute as the spiral only allows...

Why dont you try using the insert/curve by xyz points and create your "spiral" that way?

Would that work?

What's seems to be your Problem there MadMango?

It works fine here? You can't have the Sketch profile touching itself or it will fail. I just keep a very small gap in between each coil and it works fine.

The following has been true for helixes up to SW 2003. This may be valid for spirals.

After using a helix for a sweep path in a spring model, the endpoints of the helix are unavailable for future feature reference (spring arms, in this case). The workaround is to make the helix, then copy the helix in a 3D sketch using Convert Entities, and used the sketched copy as the sweep path.

Thanks Tick, that was my problem.

I was selecting additonal sketch elements along with the sprial, and didn't notice that my sweep profile wasn't following the entire sweep path (only the additional sketches I added). I'll keep this Convert Entities trick in my back pocket for future use.
