Dear Pipers,

Came across a request from 'End-User' to the use of 'Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner Ring_ASME B16.20' in place of existing 'Flat Ring Gaskets_ASME B16.21'.

It was briefed on the limitations for the use of "Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner Ring_ASME B16.20" to thin wall pipes, in accordance to Table 15 & 16 / Table SW-2.5-2 & SW-2.5-1, which is considered to be a potential problem for inner ring to extend into the pipe bore under the worst combination of eccentric installation and additive tolerances.

Though it was justified to 'End-User' to negate the use of SPW-Gaskets ( for schedules & bores not in compliance to ASME B16.20 requirements), couldn't warrant that with any evidence, as few of the international recognized standards (SHELL, TOTAL specs) were defined with SPW-Gaskets for thinner pipes (lesser schedule pipes_10S) in their latest specifications.

Is the use of 'Spiral Wound Gaskets with Inner Ring_ASME B16.20' a potential concern as defined in the codes (or) any exemptions are made available for its use on thin wall pipes?? Please advise.
