Static beams for dummies anyone spare a moment ? 6

Hi all I currently have one week to prepare for a job interview as an engineering teacher . I need to prepare a 2 hour lesson for 16 year olds who know nothing about static beams ... I myself am a little out of practice on this area but obviously have some knowledge ... Anyone able to help me out with tips and what direction to take :)

Cheers racoock that's a great reply as I am great full for all the others . My main tsar is to write down a 2 hour lesson plan on how to teach 16 year old first year apprentices who know nothing about beams .... I myself have forgotten a lot and need to refresh on the calculations as my main area is machining ....... But I'm passionate about wanting to teach engineering and willing to develop my Jen skills to pass on to others .... Your comments have been great and are what engineering is all about SHARING IDEAS[tt][/tt]
 
i think you might have mentioned "apprentices" earlier ... i thought you were talking about typical high school students (i'm assuming that apprentices are more interested in engineering things.

maybe review JE Gordon's book "why things don't fall down".

One demo, or "thought experiment", that I have find very useful, is to compare the flexural stiffness of a 2x4 with a telephone book. The only real difference between the two is that there is no shear strength between the pages of the book, and you can see the slip between pages.
 
Hi, i used to teach Engineering subjects to 16-18 year old apprentices and i remember being in your position asking people for fun/interesting ideas on how to teach beam bending theory. I had a great lesson plan in front of me the first time i came to teach it, I had a Powerpoint presentation explaining the different types of loads that can be applied, the different types of stresses that there are and how they can be calculated, relating each example to real life situations (e.g. bridges, why it gets more difficult to close a door the closer your hand gets to the hinge) - but after the first 10-15 minutes I realised that I want going to fit half of it into the allocated time as they didnt even understand what units things are measured in or how to rearrange basic equations, such as rearranging Stress = P/A to make P the subject. I ended up just spending the whole first lesson teaching very basic maths, even though they were meant to be far more advanced in Maths based on their qualifications to get on the course in the first place! I'm not trying to be negative but from my experiences i would say dont be over ambitious and dont assume that they already know the basics just because the have 5 A-C grades at GCSE :)

Basically went in asked the class if they actuslly had an idea first on what a static beam was . Where might they find them . Then moved through the lesson like that slide show on different types of beam etc got them to answer what type of beam was in the picture ... Then on to shapes of beams materials made from ... Then some basic load examples and what beam would be used for such loads
