I’m looking into use three beams to make a composite beam to resist moment in the x-axis and also shear. One will be a 1.25” flat plate which will be sandwiched between two C-channels. I was thinking placing three bolts vertically in the web with them being 2’ o/c the length of the beam. Is this generally acceptable? What all design considerations will I need to make on the bolts? How do I ensure it will truly act as one?

I didn't intend to start a quarrel. Just wanted to point out something that irks me about this thread. It's not that the OP's description was a technically incorrect statement. Just annoying to me because I expected the thread to be about something else. Low level annoyance. Not, "why would anyone reasonable person ever dare to use that phrase". More like, "that phrase... must... resist... urge... to... correct... oh hell, why resist?"

I think a lot of engineers may be like me and have a bit of OCD related to engineering terminology. This sort of discussion would have my wife rolling her eyes at me. Like she rolls her eyes at me whenever I try to explain why I think the silverware (or medication, pans, sheets, or such) is supposed to be separated a certain way!

My favorite argument from my mechanical friend - a chunk of concrete stands vertical is a column, lays horizontal, it is a beam, what is the difference!!!

On wife thing, the shoveled silverware will always silently return to the original order, translate into - I like my way :)

You "retired" folks have too much time on your hands :)

I guess JoshPlum is way too young to belong to the R-group. Maybe he is in quarantine situation :)

Not so! I am as busy as a bee. Don't know how I ever had time to go to work.
