Where can I find information/references on steel truss designs for spans of 40', the information that would help would be configurations, members sizing, connections, etc. I am most interested in gable type steel trusses.

Find suppliers that are local to your job. Different suppliers use different cross sections for members (maybe proprietary).
From my experience, use shop built trusses only not field built. Coordinate connections of the truss to the structure as early as possible. Because of the different cross sections of the truss members, specifying a connection is difficult. Some suppliers that I have worked with will supply their own as long as they know what they are connecting to. REquest shop drawings and review shop drawings closely for intended loads.
