Strainer (Fabricated or Casted)

Dear All,
I want your opinion about Y strainer. I have option to buy fabricated(A182) or Casted (A351) body for strainer. Please guide me what are the advantages and disadvantages of each type. Does ASME allows both construction method?

I would prefer fabricated strainer. Yes, ASME allows both.

TD2K, it is installed on boiler feed water line, Temperatures will be from 50C to 110C, Pressure will be maximum up to 12.40 Mpag.

Either would likely be acceptable to me. Fabricated to me would likely be preferred but might be significantly more expensive. Castings are suspectible to internal voids but inspection, NDT and your hydrotest should ensure you get a product which can withstand your pressures. No concerns with brittle failure at these temperatures and while the pressure is high, I wouldn't think it should be a problem.

However, I'm a process engineer and while I specify the design conditions, flow rates and straining levels, the mechanical engineers I work with tend to pick forgings, castings, etc.

Well, the service pressure may be high, but the differential pressure across the basket strainer will be much, much lower. Should be almost zero.
