In ACI 318-14, the commentary to Section 11.3.1.1 states the following:
"The minimum thickness requirements need not be applied to bearing walls and exterior basement and foundation walls designed by 11.5.2 or analyzed by 11.8."
So, does this mean that the minimum wall thickness requirement is only applicable when the "Simplified Method" of Section 11.5.3 is used?
Thanks.

My understanding is ,

- If the wall design follows the requirements of Section 11.5.2, the wall thickness does not need to meet the requirements of Table 11.3.1.1 . However , the minimum thickness requirements (a) and (b) of Table 11.3.1.1 will provide an indication that the thickness chosen is appropriate.

- Still you can use Section 11.5.3 if the resultant of the out-of-plane moment, is within the middle third of the wall. You can use Section 11.5.3.1 to check the out of plane strength of the wall.

Use it up, wear it out;
Make it do, or do without.
