I have a project where we never received stud rail shop drawings prior to their installation and the concrete pour. It wasn't until after the pour that we received an inspection report which clearly showed that AWS headed studs were used for the stud rails which don't meet the ACI required specifications. In the commentary for section 20.4.1 it states that "AWS D1.1 headed studs are not suitable for use as headed shear stud reinforcement" but doesn't give any explanation as to why.
Does anyone have any information as to why these headed studs aren't sufficient? My understanding of the difference is that the head of the studs per ACI are much larger but that property doesn't factor into the capacity equations. Before I get too far into the required repair to meet code requirements does anyone have any info on at least a partial capacity that could be used for the wrong type of studs?
