Substation transformer information 1

Good Morning,

I was hoping that some of you that perform substation design on a regular basis could point me in the right direction.

We have a project that includes a customer owned, 15 MVA, 115kV/12.47kV substation. I am doing some preliminary design involving area planning and basic equipment layouts. We will get someone whom specializes in this work to do the actual design. I am just running down some base information.

This is in Northern California, PG&E territory. Since the utility has not been contracted to begin their participation as yet, I just want to get an idea of some of the equipment sizes. One of the items that I need to look at is the transformer itself. Do any of you know of a manufacturer that makes this size unit? I've Googled till I'm blue and can't seem to find one that has actual equipment data on line.

That's a high voltage for a little transformer.

Only example I have in my sample data is a 15MVA ONAN design from Pauwels, 132/33kV cable-connected type, dimensions are 5.5m x 4.0m x 5m high.

For comparison a 22/36MVA ONAN/ONAF design from the same manufacturer, 132/11kV cable-connected type was 6.1m x 4.4m x 5.75 high.

That is a fairly typical transformer size for small distibution substation in the US.

There should be a lot of options for manufacturers in the US, but you might not find dimensional drawings on line - these are all custom engineered to some extent. I suspect you will need to call them or submit a request for preliminary info.

Check with CG Power in St. Louis area, Virginia Transformer, Delta-Star, ABB (old Kuhlman plant), Howard Transformer. A little small for Waukesha, but they might be interested. GE/Prolec, but these would not be made in the US.

15/20/25 MVA 115/12.47kV is the most common size of power transformer size we buy these days.

Delta Star - San Carlos (SF Bay Area) is very competitive in the northern California market.

Typical dimensions are 16' wide (with radiators), 15' long, 17' high (top of HV bushings). Weight is 117,000 pounds including oil.
