Sweeping a tool body? 1

Hi

I've read here:
that
"A body can now be created by sweeping a tool body, locked in a defined orientation, along a 3D path".

What version of NX support it?
And where can I find that option?

As far as I've seen in NX8.5 and NX9 the sweep option doesn't accept solid bodies but sketches.

To the best of my knowledge, it will be a future enhancement to NX9. It may come with the first MR, though I have not seen any official confirmation on that.

I have heard at the PLM Europe that it ( then ) is/was planned for 9.0.1

I don't think that you will get this info ,...
The software vendors don't want to reveal what they are working on. ( hm, no manufacturing company want that...)
But, what has been shown at the PLM Europe is the subdivisional modeling, the corner blend and the 4GD design . Maybe some other which I don't remember.
The 4GD is already there in some form starting in 8.5, the other 3 planned for 9.x

Yes, the plan is to support this type of feature in NX 9.0.2.x, which should be available later next year.

Will it be available for any tool shape or only for tools with symmetric body?
 
While the 'tool' body doesn't actually have to be a 'Revolved' body, the shape must be as if it were. In other words, you could use a plain cylinder or one with blended or chamfered edges.

Here's an image of an example part I created using the prototype for this project (which I no longer have access to). The revovled body was swept along the red spline resulting in the swept body which was then subttracted from the cylinder.

I am trying to get the tool to work properly "Swept Volume" in NX9 Which should allow you to sweep a solid about a path. My problem is that I am using a helical path to create a cam slot but I get the error "The tool path must be planar." Is there any way to sweep a solid using a helical path?

 
What you're seeing in NX 9.0, which is not enabled by default, is only a prototype intended for testing only. The official project is now scheduled for NX 10.0, which will be released near the end of this year.

Sweeping a solid won't be available in NX9 ?

That is the latest word on this project. More work had to be done that would change the NX part model schema making NX 9.0.x parts incompatible with NX 9.0.0 and NX 9.0.1. Therefore we had no choice but to move it to NX 10.0.

When the tool body can be defined by a planar section then it can be done with a program/journal. The attached NX8.5 part is one example. In this case my program uses an input planar spline which was wrapped around a cylinder. Then based on the slot size I created two addition splines with the spline points determined in normal planes to the wrapped spline. A swept solid was then created and subtracted from the cylinder.

- The problem is that this kind of geometry cannot be modeled (easily) by planar sections because the "cutting section" between a cutting disc and some revolved shape isn't flat.
The contact is rather S-shaped. This can be seen in the attached image.
The red rectangles shows where the disc will be i contact with the cylinder.

There are complex workarounds.
