North Sea collision: Ship carrying chemical hits jet fuel tanker

The search for a missing crew member has ended after a ship hit an oil tanker in the North Sea.

Engineering wise similar to the aviation incidents human performance likely to be the main cause.

I would have thought there should have been collision alarms on both.

Apparently the oil tanker was moored up / anchored and they saw it coming at them for 10 minutes in a dead straight line.

It was going 16 knots right through a main anchoring zone.

A crew member is missing and the cargo ship that crashed into a tanker is still on fire. Police are questioning a man in his 50s.

Seems the cargo ship is likely to sink.

I don't think either is sinking.

The tanker is US flagged but not clear whether it is just available to the US at any time or actually shipping fuel for them. It was aforementioned full, waiting to discharge at Immingham.

The Captain of the container ship has been arrested.

The crewing of these vessels is a wild west and its a bit of a mystery to me why there aren't more collisions.

It put a pretty big hole in the tanker alright. Interesting tanker with multiple tanks (16) and what looked like 6 connection points on its manifold. Think that has reduced the spill and fire to something manageable.

When you see multiple connections points that indicates that this is a product tanker which carries refined petroleum products and not crude oil.

It's irrelevant really but this tanker is one which "could" transport fuel for the US military as its US flagged vessel with US crew.

Must have been cheap jet fuel to make it worthwhile to go all the way from Greece to the UK...

Well that's what happens when you get a load of Jet A1 dumped into your hold.... wind direction also seems to have sent the flames heading onto the cargo ship and then the contents of the containers fed the flames as well.

Seems the cargo boat was held in port last July for various failures including steering and alarm malfunctions.
