We are looking forward to set-up TAT testing facility. Can anybody suggest details of how to setup best facility with list of reputed manufacturers for equipments. Anybody already setup and has experience may also raise flags on issues they may have faced.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Vipul

TAT (Type Approval Test) is a Shell thing (up to this point) which in general cycle the valve hundreds time at Full differential Pressure at its minimum design temperature. Again cycle at ambient and then at maximum design temperature.

So its should have "freezer" and "heater" and also Fugitive Emission detector.
Are you manufacturer or want to be tester only?

The issue is not within the testing facility, however the design of the valve. Not all design pass the stringent TAT testing.
- extrusion of the packing
- scaling/damage on the sealing area (stem vs gasket; disc vs seat) after hundreds of cycle
are two of many issues

Contact Shell directly is highly suggested. not all granted the privilege to do TAT.

All valves will last for years, except the ones that were poorly manufactured; are still wrongly operated and or were wrongly selected

Hi Danlap,

Thx for your reply. We are not required to have SHELL certificate directly. We are required to do TAT Test in accordance to Shell specs witnessed by TPI. Since we are manufacturers we are looking forward to have in-house TAT Testing facility.

Yes you are correct about the quality of workmanship required on valves to pass the test. Would you have any kind of sketch or more details on how to go about setting up TAT Testing facility? May be equipment list or anything?

Thanks for your time spent.

Hi vipul143,

Cannot provide answer through this forum due to some conflict of interest. If you browse my name (earlier forum) and search through other social media, you'll understand why
It really depends on your valve coverage:
- How cold: Cryogenic or only down to -50 deg Celcius?
- How hot: 400 deg Celcius or hotter?
- Bi-directional or uni-directional valve?
- Etc.

Correct me if I am wrong, but do you know how the testing procedure looks like? I am sensing you don't.
The procedure (pressure, temperature, and numbers of cycle) may only be exerted by the end user and witness by them (in some cases their TPI).
And in order to be success with the TAT, tolerance and mechanical properties must be precise. Its not just workmanship.

Connect with me through other social media. Maybe I can help you.

PS: This forum is intended to make a better valve world (discussion, lesson from other experiences). And I am in favor for TAT procedure, it simulates Operating/field condition (disregarding the water and air used instead of actual service medium [bigsmile]).
However, my comments do not represent any company that I am currently and or ever work with.

MR
