i have design bridge jacking and supporting falsework and concrete forming for the company i work for and i have a project where we have to jack and replace some bridge bearings. i will definetly need bearing stiffeners over the rams. according to aisc 9th if you provide stiffeners halfway up you dont have to check web yielding and crippling. my question: is there any other way to check the capacity fo the web for a given jack plate width besides those equations. modot and idot sometimes require aashto rules and they say the stiffs have to go up to the top flange. these stiffeners are temporary

thanks in advance and great forum by the way

Don't argue with them, just put the stiffeners all the way up. The cost for a little extra steel is not the aggrevation and delay.
