Take a look at the screen shot (CamBam font). Liked the preview option.

Some fonts are just not suitable for this application. Sometimes increase of Points Per Spline could help (then it copy more precisely shape of a letter), but often font itself contains auto crossing curves and then only manual adjustment could help.
