This is an amazing story: For over 40 years, the CIA and the West German government jointly 'owned' the Swiss company Crypto AG, the manufacturer of encryption machines used by hundreds of governments and multinational corporations to protect their communications with other governments and corporations. The original technology used in these machines was based on the 'Enigma' machines developed by Nazi Germany, one of which was smuggled out of Norway during the war by a Russian, who brought it to the US, and upon which the more modern machines sold by Crypto AG were eventually based on.

The story and the breaking of the Enigma code is a great read and achievement, it is well covered in Wikipedia for those interested.
