It is well known to everybody that to become a respectable engineer we need to have more experience than qualification. In the present days of technology evolution an engineer must able to work in the technology platform to regarded as an engineering technologist

In the recent days there are more and vide variety of technology are available in the market with respect to the requirement based engineering. People often came across the term “PLM” This activity can be performed only by engineer and not by an IT professional

Actually the PLM will simplify, record the history of your engineering execution activity so that you can back track all the activity stage by stage. The product based companies are already got in to PLM platform to reduce the product development time, increase the performance, quality and record the change management activities.

Due to the competitive market condition and the complex operation procedure the Oil and Gas EPC companies are struggling to manage the project to meet the deliveries. Using this PLM functionality you can able to streamline and manage the operation procedure, project timeline and cost of a project and company in a better manner. It is well known that the Oil and Gas EPC are not migrated the working environment in to PLM platform.

The time has arrived for this segment to implement the PLM functionality to survive in the market.

And hence you need to be an engineering technologist to perform the task in the PLM platform.

Well first, do you mean Product Life Management? If so, what skills does an Engineering Technologist have to do this? The discipline that best suits this would be a System Engineer, which actually has its own math and science which is beyond what an Engineering Technologist would have. Traditional Engineering disciplines would have similar or the same math needed to develop the science or theories needed in System Engineering. That is why System Engineering is comprised of many engineering disciplines.

The term system engineer applies to so many disciplines when you refer a computer system or a package/product that give complete solution of a problem or a process. But an engineering technologist is different because he must know about the latest evolving technology in his discipline of work. Take an example of an instrumentation engineer, we know he is master in designing an instrument that may be operated by hydraulic or pneumatic system but if you notice there are instruments developed with hi-tech features which can be operated by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This obviously reduces the space and maintenance. The technologist must be able to interpret the various specification of the product in order to design an instrument. This also helps him to sustain in the current competitive market. Just like this an engineer must be able to work in the technology environment in order to enhance the skill set to sustain in the competitive workforce organization
 
Within the US the curriculums regarding Engineering and Engineering Technology differed primarily within the amount of high level mathematics. Engineering having the greater math emphasis and Engineering Technology being a bit more "hands on".

In terms of technology use, there have been many conversations in these forums regarding reliance on technology. Technology is one tool that an engineer uses. However, they still should rely on their own skills and experience to ensure that the output makes sense.

PLM could have a number of meanings. Product Lifecycle Management, Product Launch Management, Project Launch Management etc. In any of these roles, it is a position dealing with communication means and reporting more than the engineering aspects. Often experienced engineers get moved into these roles (sometimes against their will). Suitability depends on the individual and not necessarily their technical savvy.

I am an engineering technologist because I have a three year diploma from what was then a college, as opposed to a four year engineering degree.

PLM is an entirely separate function. It is a database. The administrator has to set up a folder structure, work out user interfaces and develop some understanding of everyone's work process. Note how engineers, technologists, technicians are specialists, as are all other professionals and tradespeople. If the PLM administrator thinks they know how to do your job, everybody is in trouble.

An IT professional can manage PLM effectively as long they keep their mitts off the engineering. You can manage PLM effectively as long you keep you mitts off the IT, and the electronics and chemicals.

The entry level skill is abstract thinking, and respect for your fellow professionals and tradespeople. I don't see a distinction here between engineers and technologists.

A wise man put it to me this way:

The way it is supposed to work is:

(1) Engineers develop the technology.
(2) Technologists apply the technology developed by Engineers.
(3) Technicians implement the technology developed and applied per (1) and (2).

We have muddied the waters by caving into market pressures and dumbing down (YES - DUMBING DOWN) engineering so that there is no distinction between the three.
