closed-loop geothermal system
where a benign working fluid circulates in an industrial-sized, underground heat exchanger
without the need for a pumping system.

I suspect the closed loop will need a pump to circulate the liquid??

How else did it work?

Reportedly in early 2021 BP and Chevron forked over 40 million US bux to the Canadian startup.

"Low-enthalpy geothermal projects ... lose between 50-80 percent of the power they generate in the task of pumping the water up and down."

I wonder how leak-proof drilled holes 1-3 miles below the surface are.
 
Rock doesn't have very good thermal conductivity. I guess pumping the fluid reduces some of the problems related to quenching but it doesn't do anything to improve the heat transfer rate through the insulating rock.
 
I'm waiting for the greenies to worry over the impact of geothermal cooling of the planet. I can see them arguing "atmospheric heating" and "planetary cooling" simultaneously.
 
And if you were wondering why they built it in Germany, it will be subsidised at the eye watering rate of €227/MWh

Ah, OK its a thermo syphon.

Looks to be very expensive though and can't see the flowrate and energy per drilled hole being very high compared to the cost of doing so.

Also doesn't say what the temperature difference is or flow rates or anything much really.

I spent some wasted time on the Eavor web site looking in vain for any details.
The information presentation reminded my of a Ginzu Knife sales pitch.
Undisclosed working fluid.
Undisclosed borehole lining method.
Undisclosed energy extraction method.
