Threaded Rod welded to Plate 3

Looking at the attached connection of a threaded rod to a plate. When i am checking the effective throat, what would be the "R" in this case when looking at the 5/8R and 5/16R?

R is the radius of the threaded rod, so 3/8"

PCI used to give the effective throat of a single-sided flare bevel weld as (0.2*bar diameter).

dauwerda, by 3/8" i assume you mean 3/4"?

How does welding onto threads like that end up working in real life? Does it weld just like round bar or do the threads need special consideration?

McMichael05, No, the diameter is 3/4" (per the drawing in the OP), so the radius is 3/8".

On a threaded rod, I would use something less than the root dia. or radius, not the outer radius of the threaded rod. The threads just melt away on welding, and this appears to be a tension rod, where the threads or any funny geometry at the root might actually be considered some sort of a stress raiser. Then, I believe that AWS calls for some throat reduction due to the lack of penetration at the root of that flare bevel weld. You would actually improve that weld condition if your ground the threads off the back side of that rod, so it actually sat down, solid, on the pl.
