I'm lookng for a good wood design book to help on the SE II exam (something other than the NDS w/ examples).

Something with practical examples, like I would see in the framing of a house, any suggestions?

I think "Design of Wood Structures" by Breyer, et. all is pretty much the standard when it comes to wood design.

I assume you mean wood design in general and not just "Timbers" (as you will learn by reading Breyer, this has a specific meaning).

Yeah, your assumption is correct. I just browsed that book and looks pretty good.

Thanks!

Second that. It goes over design principles pretty well too, not just wood design.

Third that - the Breyer book is outstanding.

Also for the SEII you will want to be familiar with wood detailing practicies - a good (though slightly dated) resource is the SEAOC "Seismic Detailing Guidelines for Engineered Light-frame Timber Construction" which may be purchased from their website for $75 (hard copy only):

There are several other good references at the Structural Engineer's Association of CA bookstore.

I also recommend Seismic Design Manual Vol I and II you can get from ICC (written by SEAOSC). Mine are loaned out right now, but I recall they have some good worked timber examples. GET THE ERRATA TOO THOUGH!!!!!

The AITC Manual, and "The Douglas-Fir Use Book".

Thanks for the advice, I have searched for all of them and purchased "Design of Wood Structures" by Breyer. I am retaking the exam and this looks like exactly what I need. I also have downloaded the free publications off the AWC website so I should be all set.
