I need help to design a motor control schematic diagram where a start and stop button contorls the following. When the start button in engauged the motor will operate in the foward direction for 3 seconds, stop for 3 seconds, reverse direction for 3 seconds, stop for 3 seconds and repeat this cycle until the stop button is pressed. This problem has been troubling me as I cannot seem to restart the cycle and chase my own tail as I design it.

I worked for a company that built all these timer modules. Of course, I dragged home all the defective returns for projects. With all this free stuff gathering dust the first thing I turn to when I have a project like this is an Arduino UNO. At less than $10 for some knockoffs it is the easy way to do projects like this.

It has to be a simple schematic representation no electronics only push buttons control relays off-delay timers or on-delay timers

If you want brief reciprocating motion like that you don't need to do it in the motor. It might be more effective to use a solenoid, or a gear train to do this. Constantly starting and restarting the motor will shorten its life.
How many revolutions are you trying to accomplish at each phase?

No electronics? What other phobias do you have?

I suspect the reason for using discrete relays is that 'no electronics' is one of the constraints of the homework question. [wink]
