Traverse flue spaces

Hi,

We are discussing in office about traverse flue spaces in racks.

Accorrding to NFPA 13 traverse flue spaces between loads and at rack uprights are required and shall be min. 6"

In attachment you can see drawing with 3 option how we understand this description. What solution is corect? Option 1, option 2 or option 3?

Try looking A.3.3.171(a) through (k), edition 2019. My personal interpretation is the following.

Intent of 13 is to maintain a clear 6" flue space. A rack upright within the void does not inhibit heat & smoke and therefore it does not take part when measuring the 6". Therefore, when the racks are open (only pallets) the 6" can be measured between the commodities only with the upright centered. See for example A.3.3.171(b). When the racks are closed in any form such as slatted or solid, the flue space is defined by the void between their edges and must be maintained clear. See A.3.3.171(c) and (d). The commodity must not in any way exceed these edges and overlap this space.
