We have client-owned lidar point cloud data available in .la20 format files.
We understand this to be a Trimble-proprietary file format.

We have no investment into the Trimble software ecosystem, and already have tools and workflows to use the more common .las and .laz point cloud files.

Can anyone suggest a tool to convert .la20 to .las or .laz?

Tell your client to get the surveyor not to provide things in Trimble proprietary outputs. Engineers work in CAD typically and the surveyor should make the output fit your requirements.

Wow, this .la20 format seems to be a black hole, and not even those that advertise being able to convert formats don't show it as an option.

Advise your customer to get the assessor not to give things in Trimble restrictive yields. Architects work in CAD regularly and the assessor should make the yield fit your prerequisites
