true position

good morning, every one!
I went to a job interview last Friday, They gave me a micrometer and a regular solid tube and they asked me to measured the true position. I told them I was not prepare for something like that and Of course I was not consider for the position.
Can some one explained me how to calculate a true position on a situation like that.

I don't know, is kind of frustrating, I asked if he can provide me with a drawing, I was hoping to find some basic dimensions or any other help full information, but he said he only need to see how I will calculate a true position on a part like that.

I think it was a quick test to determine how confident you were in your knowledge of GD&T. If you immediately came back with "You can't measure the true position of a tube using only a micrometer" you may have been considered for the position.

Depending on how badly I wanted the job I would have said "I define the origin of the coordinate system as the corner of the desk, and the X axis of the coordinates joins the tube to the origin. The true position of the tube is (however many) micrometer lengths +/-1 from the origin, along the X axis", using the micrometer as a standard of length.

Or, "No, I don't know how to do that, could you show me the answer please?" And then find fault with their approach.

Trick questions in interviews are a lousy idea.

It may have been as simple as checking to see if the Micrometer measured zero before you started to measure.
A favorite trick of HR types yeas ago, was to hand an applicant a micrometer that did not zero, and ask them for the exact dimension of a measured object.
It would also appear that English is not the first language of the OP.
