hello
i would like to know the difference between using start gas to run turbo starter of gas turbine or using an electric motor to run it
where is the advantage , the advantage of each process
best regards

We can't help - You have given us no information.

What is your vender/supplier saying?

How big is your turbine, what are loads, how often dp you statrtup and shutdown? What is your turning gear and cooldown periods?

we are working at oil production center
and we have 4 turbine 2 for gaza compression and 2 others for pwer generation ( 10 MW)
long time ago ( 10 years ) till our day the process to start the turbine by start gas wich turn turbo starter befor turbine ansure the autnomous rotation
we didnt get any problem , but we have recieved orders to modify teh process of starting by using a start electric motor instead of start gas
i dont have an idea where is the advantage by use an electric motor
hope u undertund me

My GUESS: Someone in authority is trying to assure that the site has capability to start the turbines if you have no start gas, but do have grid power or a local generator and fuel supply.
... or maybe they just don't want to use start gas at all for some undisclosed reason.

One logical step would be to contact the turbines' supplier and find out if/how electric start is possible, and ask them to propose a solution.

OR, I could have completely misunderstood what you are asking; your question is both ambiguous and light on background, for what might well be a fairly major change/investment.

I agree that the requested/commanded change brings no advantages that are obvious from here, given how little we know about your plant. There exists the possibility that your superiors are planning for some future condition or limitation or exigency of which you and we are unaware.

thank you for replaying
i would like to inform you that as i told you we are in a production site
so be sur there is no problem of gas alimentation , also we have a local power generation supply
my question with out thinking about leaders ot authority here is
whats the difference between the two process ?? where is the advantege to change start gas by an electric motor
thx

With a gas turbine generator, the generator is often used as the motor to start the gas turbine.
This method may not work for a compressor.

first let me state, I know very little about gas turbine and nothing about "starting gas".

I am imagining the "gas Start" is using high pressure, low volital hydrocarbon gas to spin turbine to light-off speed. thus this method would result in the release of hydrocarbon gas into the enviroment. thus the use of a motor start is to reduce the HC emmissions of the site.

Just my Wild A Guess!

I'm thinking the way byrdj is, viz., someone is looking to meet some environmental emissions compliance standard but hasn't bothered to tell the OP this...then again, depending on where in the world the plant is located emissions compliance may not even be on anyone's radar...and the info supplied remains light on specifics.

As to starting diversity, the OP seems to indicate the desire was to change ALL compressors to electric start, which would not affect source diversity at all.

Lacking a valid and compelling reason for doing so, I'd see no advantage whatever to changing start-up methods from gas to electric.

as you said this is the role of start gas
but if we talk abou hydrocarbon release iam not sur if thco is is a good reason because we dont start turbibe every day , sometimes we did it after 6 months or even a year , and the quantitiy of release hydrocarbon isnt so important
any way thank you
