This question is in regards to one of the projects that we worked on a earlier this year. It's a large multi-purpose room (70'x100') with metal deck on long span steel joists, precast walls over shallow foundations. Location: Chicago area. SOG: 5" on 10 mil vapor retarder over 6" compacted fill. The slab was poured in April.

The owner is now considering putting a turf type of cover over the floor.

My question: The floor is regular 3000 psi normal weight conc. Is one year enough for the floor to dry out enough to place an un-breathable topping?

Several years back I attended a lunch-and-learn seminar presented by a vapor barrier manufacturer, I can't remember which one. They claimed that their product, when placed under a concrete slab, would prevent vapor from coming up from ground water and permeating the slab and that the regular polyethylene membrane commonly used would not. (I can't prove or disprove this and obviously they had a product to sell.)

But, one of the points they made was that while it may not have mattered in the past, now it's more crucial. That is because the EPA now mandates water-based adhesives for attaching floor coverings.

If any of that is true you may want to discuss this issue with the floor membrane manufacturer. Other than that I would think that a year's worth of curing would give the slab plenty of opportunity to evacuate its moisture.

Hey, no problem. By the way, I think this is the company that put on that seminar. They have a lot of technical articles on their site that are fairly interesting. As always, though, remember that they are selling a product. That doesn't mean that everything on their site couldn't be completely true, but caveat emptor.
