Anyone have a favorite technical book or manual regarding underground power system cables and calculations? I'm working on a task that has piqued my interest in this subject (which I barely know anything about).

I'm looking more for a textbook type book with theory, not a quick calculation handbook. Preferably a book still in print or readily available.

"Rating of Electric Power Cables," by George J. Anders, IEEE Press, 1997 gives very complete coverage of ampacity calculations, with full theoretical explanations. The IEC method of accounting for moisture migration is covered as well as techniques for finite element analysis.
 
I'd also like to have a reference for calculating the impedance characteristics from the geometry, as you would do for 3-ph OH transmission and for fault calculations. Thank you for your thoughts!
 
I use "Electrical Transmission and Distribution Reference Book," by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, 1964. I don't know if there is an updated version or not.

For getting down to basics where I have to calculate conductor GMR or skin effect, I go back to my old college text (I'm dating myself now), "Elements of Power System Analysis," William D. Stevenson, Jr., McGraw-Hill, 1962.

Also, if you can find it (I don't have a copy but had use of one a while ago) - "Siemens Power Cables and their Application," Part 1, 1990.
 
Luckily someone here still has a copy of the Westinghouse book. It looks like the techonology described is a little old (understatement) but the calculations look pretty descriptive and promising. I'll take a closer look at it when I get a little more time and concentration. I'll continue to look for the Stevenson book, too. Thanks for your help!

1- Power and Communication Cables Theory and Applications (R. Bartniska & K. Srivasta) IEEE Press
2- 835-1994 IEEE Standard Power Cable Ampacity Table, Section 3 (Cable Parameters) and Annex A-2 (Calculation Samples). This std covers Cables rated through 138 kV and laminar dielectric power cables rated through 500 kV .
3- Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA)
4- IEEE Standard 14. Chapter 10-Cable Systems.
5- AmpCalc Software Instruction Manual.
6- Engineering Cable Guide- Okonite Company.
7- Power Cable Manual-Southwire Company.
 
Southwire has some technical manuals you can request from them. One is on Cables ( I got the Overhead Conductor Manual from them and it's pretty decent and free.

I'm also looking for a good power cable book. I found one (actually they are two, first one is theory and 2nd is application) that seem to be rather good. Find their ref, below:

Southwire publishes a Power Cable Manual that is approximately 100 pages or so. I have a copy and it appears to be pretty good. You can request a complimentary copy from Southwire's web site (
I bought a copy of the Westinghouse T&D book a year or so ago (everybody needs this one). I found it used via the web site ( I just now did a search and found two copies of the 4th edition (1964) for sale, one is $180 and the other is $75.
