I'm looking for industry-accepted standards with regard to installation of underground piping. Does it depend on the piping material or intended contents? Are there widely accepted standards, or do individual companies write their own? Thanks.

Underground Piping:
Bedding?
Backfill?
Compaction?

You have asked a very big question. The answers are many and depend on all of the above and more.

The More includes:
Geographic Location,
National Standards,
Codes,
Commodity,
Purpose (of the line),
Temperature,
Pressure,
Pipe Material,
Soil Type,
Water Table,
Cathodic Protection Requirements,

I am sure there are people with long years of experience that will have a lots to say on this.

Is there something specific you want to ask about, such as bedding material, backfill, or are you looking for something like a construction spec?

I think these are in addition to what Pennpiper already mentioned,

What kind of pipeline are you installing, water, gas, oil, sewer, runoff drainage, other, what industry, onshore, offshore, countryside, city construction, weather, under highways, under railroads, swamps, if buildings, electrical cables, electric transmission lines overhead, other pipelines, houses, churches, schools in the area, fiber optic cables are nearby, what equipment is being used, all may have some bearing on how you might want to install it.

Try Australian standard AS 2566. It is used widely in SE Asia and the Middle East
