Utilities Profile Detail

Anybody has some kind of Utilities Profile Detail that would show how deep the Utilities underground piping are? I'm running an 8"FP (Fire Protection) tapping from an existing 8" Water Main to the Building. On the way, it would cross a 60" Storm piping. So I would like to show how deep the Storm and Fire Protection piping.

there is no such detail. you need to pothole the existing dry utilities or pull the manhole lids and measure to invert of gravity lines or pull valve box covers and measure down to the operating nuts for buried valves

I've found some storm drain profiles over the internet. It is a sort of graph, Elevation versus Distance of the storm piping. The missing piece would be that invert elevations that you mentioned.

Those typical details don't show depth. If they showed a depth, then all depths would be the same, hence no slope of the pipe and .... no flow.

As cvg says, pull one cover, measure depth, pull the next, measure depth. If your lucky you'll be able to get an idea of depth at the crossing using the slope you can calculate between manholes.

every utility at every site will be different, there is no standard depths and even if there are, you still must verify to see if the standard was followed. otherwise you risk major conflict and re-design during construction. Have your contractor dig up the storm drain to verify it or hire a potholer to give you the information.

For buried utility lines,contact the dig safe line; for storm drain contact the highway department.

If you can, find the owners of all the public utlities and ask for as-builts. You may have to pay copying costs but you will have the right info. Don't forget to add in the wall thickness of each utility. RCP is much thicker than DIP.

one call service and as builts are good for a general CYA, but physical locating using potholing or electronic tracing and survey is the only reliable way to located as-built utilities.

I remember the getting an electro-magnetic location survey on a 40'x 40' plot that cost about $3000. Not exactly accurate for depth, but there are several methods on that website for whatever you need.
