vertical pump foundation 1

I am going to do a vertical pump foundation by a reservoir. This is my first time. Anyone can provide a set of goby drawing for me or direct me to some kind of website? Thanks a lot

The pump manufacturer will have some published guidelines about installation.

I imagine the pump manufacturer's Quote probably contains wording that the pump supporting foundation must be adequately stiff for their acceptance vibration guarantees to be valid.
In days past it seemed pump manufacturers' calcs and models for critical speeds used incredibly , unrealistically stiff boundary conditions right at the end of the equipment they will furnish.

When you say vertical pump I picture either -
- Something all above the pump room floor, maybe even on grade, like this -

or.....
- a pump mounted on sole plated on mezzanine about a sump or well, with several feet of pump hanging below the mezzanine/floor.


A basic detail that can impact the operating vibration in a bad way and ruin several weeks of acceptance testing and trigger hefty back charges is the bolting and grouting of sole plates to the floor/foundation.

ACI has a document on dynamic equipment foundations.

ACI 351.3R-18

I've only got the 2004 version of this document. But, the first thing to look at is the "Rules of Thumb" for equipment that weighs less than 5000 lbs:
a) Weight of the foundation block should be at least 3 times the weight of rotation equipment or 5 times the weight of reciprocating equipment.

b) If you're support it on piles this rule of thumb reduces to 2.5x weight of rotating equipment, or 4 times the weight of reciprocating equipment.

c) The foundation should be heavy enough that the resultant of any lateral and vertical loads needs to fall within the middle third of the foundation so that there isn't even partial uplift of the foundation.

d) Minimum width should be 1.5 times the vertical distance from the machine centerline to the bottom of the foundation block.

e) The thickness should be at least 1/5 of it's width (short side), 1/10 of its long side or 2 ft whichever is greatest.

 
Unfortunately, you will most likely not find a website dedicated to the vertical pump foundation design by a reservoir.

Unless you can get a cutsheet of the equipment from the manufacturer or have a cutsheet from a similar sized piece of equipment then you have to use rules of thumbs as Josh stated. Be relatively conservative and recheck the design once you get a submittal of the purchased equipment. Also good to contact a manufacturer and see if they will give you a cutsheet for your design.

 
We have had vertical inline pumps (not sure if this is what you have)which vendors didnt want to be rigidly fixed to the foundation. Some vertical pumps are expected to float therefore pump base plate slides on the pedestal embed plate. We made sure foundstion was 1.5 to 2 times the mass and ensured foundation could take any wind or seismic. The base plate is slotted to the corners per the photo in the link so you might have some clamping force but not much more. Cant remeber if they used spring washers or not. We are used to using aci for horizontal pumps so took a lot of convincing for us to buy into a sliding baseplate concept. It helped i had access to a mechanical eng who specialised in vertical pumps.

What im trying to say is talk to a vendor once you have a pump type nailed down.

we never got a complete vendor infor yet. here is what I know so far from a test sheet.

right angle drive--- mfg: RANDOLPH, SERIAL NO: M16840560P
fire pump---- mfg: NATIONAL, MODEL NUMBER H12HC 1780 RPM, rating 2000gpm @ 125psi
driver---- mfg: COMMINS CFP7E-F60 DIESEL DRIVER

I see the client wants the pedestal of the diesel driver to be isolated from the rest of the pad. I do not know why. we hve been asking for vender info so we will know weight, dimensions and how they are mounted. not getting any yet. I did some research online myself. it seems there is not much vibration for a vertical pump. I do want to make sure they are all properly fastened and mounted which we do not get any information yet.
