Vibration of Piping System Good Books? 1

I am interested in any good books that forum members may recommend on the analysis and design of piping systems subject to vibration.

I don't know offhand of any books dedicated to piping vibrations but I can cite Wachel and Bull as prolific authors of papers on the subject. Wachel is more into piping system external vibrations concerning supports, etc. while Bull and associates (from Australia I believe) analyze sound transmissions from the fluid inside the pipe.
The Texas A&M Machinery Noise Symposiums deal frequently with piping vibration subjects probably because they are in the midst of the oilfields. I'll have to look further into my library for some specific references on the subject

I dug up my 21/2 inch thick file of hardcopy papers on piping vibrations and was prepared to cite two of Wachel's papers and a few other goodies when I found I had been upstaged badly by electricpete's single link to what must be about 50 Wachel papers and many others dear to my heart probably all worth reading. So far I've only read Wachel's latest from beatiful Hawaii but I plan to get back to more later. I wanted to give you a star for that one-liner electricpete but I can't find the damned star button to press. How do I do it? In any case, I'll keep my pipe vibration file handy in case anything comes up that has not already been addressed by Mr. Wachel and his associates.

To dgallagher-Your application note is timely and useful. I'd like to mention though that Wachel and Bates' 200 Hz frequency monitoring range may not be wide enough if you're concerned about other modes of pipe vibration than bending. Particularly, lobar modes of pipe "shells" for higher pressure systems can more likely be found well into the Kilohertz range where outflowing pump vibration sources like Impeller Blade Passing excitation can cause damage or annoying airborne noise transmissions through the pipewalls. A first-time test of a newly operational piping system should probably look up to 10 KHz (depending on pipewall thickness)to uncover potential high frequency resonances in addition to baselining the lower frequency pipe vibrations.

Mahulja article that appeared in August 1998 issue of Hydrocarbon processing Magazine (archives) - Influence of piping vibration on pump shaft cracks and the definitive study by Wachel and Bates published by Southwest Research Institute.
