I need to modify a tie rod design.

My original design of (4) 1.25" diameter A36 bar are currently cast into the concrete pier, mechanically connected to base plate and anchor bolts. The original design has A36 field-welded spliced to either A36 flat bar or angle per contractor option.

The contractor NOW wants to use rebar with "Zap Screwlok" splices.

To make the transition from the current A36 to A615, i will use A706 weldable rebar for the first and second splice.

Can i use my typical specification of E70XX electrodes?

What other concerns or cautions do i need to consider when specifying weldable rebar?

Thank you!

Welding of reinforcing falls under AWS D1.4. For A706 bars the weld shoud E80XX. I am not sure what welds you are making. The contractor will need to have WPS qualified by testing per section 6.2, along with the welder preforming the work. Only fillet welds WPS do not require testing.
