Hi guys,

Currently I am involve in designing a drilling/riser platform. In our platform we have 6 slots for wellhead. 5 will be used for well fluids and the remaining one is for well kill operations.

Can anyone tell me what is well kill operations and how it is works? Please I need guidance here.

well killing is an operation where fluid, weighred water etc, is pumped into the well bore to hold back the reservoiu7 fluids. the idea is to have a weight of fluid in the annulus greater than the pressure of the reservoir, thus ensuring that the well does not flow during operations.

Is this well killing performed during the abandonment of the wells sort of like we seal the wells?

I am sorry for asking more because I am a young design engineer and this terms and its concerns is my very first time encounter. We don't have drilling engineer or petroleum engineer in our office that can really answer my concerns.
 
Well kill is not an abandonment technique. Specifically it is performed so that an intervention can be performed (wireline, coiled tubing, frac etc.). A well may be killed several times during its life depending on intervention requirements that may arrize.

Thanks again Antman25 and dadfap. Since you guys are petroleum background (and i am not..), do you guys know any internet website that offers information on well killing operations. I have tried so many times (using google) but there is no websites that offer much information on this matter.

The reason you cant find any help on the internet about well control is it is a big money maker for the schools,

every person that is expected to become involved in the drilling of a well and later the production is expected to have attended some form of schooling on this subject,

Just how important this is shows here, You are planning a five well platform that has yet to be drilled, you do not understand that the well control is very much part of the planning, Casing setting depths and drilling fluid weights use in the initial drilling of the well are more important than the kill proceeder, get them wrong and and the only proceeder you will end up following is a relief well.

I would sincerely suggest that the right people be consulted as a little bit of knowledge can be extremely dangerous.

Actually we are an offshore topsides engineering design company. Most of our design scope is just the facilities of the topsides, i.e. processing facilities like wellhead control panel with the wellhead control philosophy, the production manifolds, and the utilities like fuel gas system, produced water system etc, etc. The christmas tree SOW is not falls under design consultant, it falls under the christmas tree vendor working closely with the client. The client only tells us how many wellhead they want in the platforms and what kind of safety valves that the wellheads have - which is based on their findings with the wellhead vendor. For us we just set the control philosophy of the wellhead valves closure like during ESD or PSD or even USD. The details of the wellhead or how the depth of the casing or whatever you call it most of the time we do not know because personally I think its a specialist subject which people with petroleum engineering or reservoir people can answer best. And because I have that curiosity, I joined this petroleum group to ask more about this well killing operations that who knows one day when I became a senior and there is a curious young engineer ask me about this... and for sure you guys will be credited.
