Dear All,
Could you please advise if we could use HTRI to design SRU Waste Heat Boiler (WHB) using HTRI? If yes, please advise how to do it. Thx

I hope others know what your abbreviations mean, but next time use the full words and not abbreviations and add as much detail as you can about your particular query

The word "design" has me nervous, especially when I saw the other forums where you posted your question. HTRI, a heat exchanger design software, is not really intended to do detail AMSE boiler calculations. Please get someone with more experience in boiler design involved.

Thank you for your response. I am asking for thermal design not mechanical. I agree with you, we could use ASME for mechanical parts. Any clue about thermal design? Thx

I just realized that "SRU" is for a sulphur recovery unit. I really don't think that HTRI is designed for that, but you'd need to talk with someone at HTRI itself (

to find out as I don't own the program. There were a number of technical papers that came up when I googled SRU heat exchanger design; however, I'm not sure it's something that I'd want to get into -- I think it would be far cheaper to buy that than to design my own.

You can use HTRI to design SRU (Sulfur Recovery Unit) WHB. However, as you mentioned, you must use it with caution. Typically with SRU WHB there are other parameters, such as the velocity range of the sulfur gas which must be considered. Most of the design criteria considered in SRU WHB are proprietary to the SRU licensors as are most SRU equipment (condensers, reheaters, reflux condensers). If you've been commissioned to design a SRU WHB and have never done one before, I would recommend consulting with an engineer/company that has experience in these type of exchangers. They are very complex and can be problematic if designed incorrectly.
