Why is Nitronic 60 (SA-479 S21800) NP in VIII-1

Hello,

Does anybody know why SA-479 S21800 (Nitronic 60) is "Not Permitted" for use in ASME VIII-1, per ASME IID Table 1A? It is permitted for Section III, but "NP" for Section I and XII. I need it for its anti-galling properties as part of the pressure boundary in an ASME B31.3 application. I have been trying to find out more background on the reason why it is "NP".

Not permitted in ASME B&PV Code space means there is reference to a material specification for non-pressure retaining applications. This could mean either the material cannot be used for pressure retaining applications because of weldability or service limits OR there has been no interest for use as a code pressure retaining material. I would check for any Code Cases with this material as a last resort.

Ok thanks for responding. I started looking for Code Cases and found a reference to "Code Case 1817" in reference to this material, so perhaps that has the answer.

I guess CC1817 isnt active anymore, as its not listed in the latest CC volume (2015). Looking at II-D and VIII-1 I see no more entries for S21800 other than the one mentioned above.

Most of this material is made to specs that do not have controlled mechanical properties, and hence they are not allowed.
Look at the old code case, you may be able to figure out where things went.
You could also look at Nit50.

Hello XL83NL and EdStainless, thanks for following up. I was trying to find the CC1817, noticed that it wasn't still current, and expected to be able to find an old version of it, so that I could read the text. However, my searches haven't come up with anything. If you happen to know where I can find what it says, it might provide some insight as to why it is permitted in Section III but not in VIII-1.

Good morning All, Just a quick update:
Just found that Nitronic 60 is permitted in ASME VIII-1 when purchased as a bolting material conforming to SA-193 B8S. This is listed in Table UHA-23 and also in IID. The MTR from the supplier lists both SA-479 and SA-193 B8S. The A479 version is annealed-only.
