Why is the middle east so oil rich?

Not being a geologist, I often wonder why this part of the world is so rich in oil deposits. Where was the middle east (in relation to the rest of the tectonic plates) when the flora/fauna that is now oil were living?

Funny about geologists. When I worked for Santos in South Australia they reckoned you would have more success finding a successful oil well by shooting a shotgun at a map and drilling where the pellet landed, than using a geologists assessment. Perhaps the geologists used a different shotgun?
